Drug Rehabilitation Detox
Posted in Drug Rehabilitation on November 25th, 2009 by admin – 3 CommentsUnfortunately, sometimes before the psychological and behavioral issues of drug rehab can be addressed, the stark realities of the physical body must be dealt with first. The process the body goes through when withdrawing from drugs can be uncomfortable, distressing, and in the case of alcohol, even fatal.
Depending on the severity of the withdrawal symptoms, which should be assessed by a physician in a clinical setting, there are basically two different approaches to drug detoxification.
If the symptoms are acute, it may be necessary to hospitalize the client before they enter drug rehab. Only a hospital can offer around the clock monitoring of symptoms and vital signs. Once the client is medically stable and cleared by a physician, they can then enter a drug rehab facility to begin the true process of recovery from addiction.
If the withdrawal symptoms are less acute, many rehab facilities offer their clients sub-acute detoxification onsite. In this scenario, the client enters rehab and begins their recovery immediately, but is also seen by a medical professional who can assess their withdrawal symptoms. Appropriate medications are prescribed to lessen the physical symptoms of withdrawal and any panic or anxiety the client may be feeling because of the process. The client is then weaned off the medications during their stay in rehab.
Either way, it is important to know that it is possible to treat the physical withdrawal symptoms of quitting drugs. Quitting doesn’t have to mean suffering.
